Svatopluk Sem

Soloist of the Czech National Opera

Mr. Sem devoted himself to singing, in particular to the folk music, from childhood. In 1992 he was enrolled at the Conservatory in České Budějovice under the tutelage of prof. Dagmar Volfová. During the studies Mr. Sem participated successfully in more song contests and from the third study year he was cooperating with the ensemble of the South Bohemian Theatre in České Budějovice, where the graduate found his permanent engagement in 1998. Mr. Sem studied some tens of roles of different character here, e.g. Papagena the Magic Flute, Valentino in Faust, Guglielmo in the opera Così fan tutte or Germont in La Traviata. Mr. Sem performs annually on the Rotating Scene in Český Krumlov. He also appeared on the stages of the Municipal Theatre in Ústí nad Labem, the Brno National Theatre, the Municipal Theatre in Carlsbad. He also took part in performances abroad, e.g. in Greece, Bulgaria, Japan, Denmark, Austria and Germany. Mr. Sem also gives regular performances in the George Myron Theatre in Ostrava and in the Moravian Theatre in Olomouc. Since 2007 he is the permanent guest singer of the Prague State Opera House, of the J. K. Tyl Theatre in Pilsen or of the Brno National Theatre. Mr. Sem was several times nominated for the South Bohemia Thalia prize and was awarded this prize for the best stage performance in 2004, 2005 and in 2007. In 2007 Mr. Sem was included into a wider nomination for the Thalia prize for the Figaro part in the Barber of Seville. He is since the season 2009/2010 a soloist of the Prague State Opera.

The Prague State Opera in cooperation with the Slovart publishing house publishes a representative book tracking the history of this significant cultural institution since its opening in 1888 till the end of the 2002/2003 season. The publication called The Prague State Opera – Theatre History in Pictures and Dates is focusing solely on the opera featured at the scene, even though the theatre under various names also served to presentation of drama plays, operettas and ballet. The Prague State opera plans to publish the volumes concentrating on those genres in the next years.
