Martin Babjak studied at the Bratislava conservatoire under professor I. Černecká. In 1985 he was a student at the singing school Centro di perfezionamento cantanti lirici at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. He began his professional opera career in Banská Bystrica, and in 1989 earned a place at the Slovak National Theatre. As laureate of the Pavarotti competition in Philadelphia (1992) he won an invitation to guest in the Philadelphia opera in the role of Marcel in Puccinis La Boh&egarve;me and as king Alfonse in Donizetti’s La Favorita. In 1995 he was the winner of the 27th annual international singing competition Totti dal Monte in Trevis. He then starred as Escamillo in Bizet’s Carmen in the performances staged in Trevis and Rovig. He has subsequently performed as a guest in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, France, Norway, Egypt, Canada, the USA and Japan. In 1997 he recorded his first profile CD with the Košice State Philharmonic. His repertoire features: Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro), Guglielmo (Cosi Fan Tutti), Figaro (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Sharpless (Madame Butterfly), Eugen Onegin, Jago (Otello), Posa (Don Carlos), Wolfram (Tannhäuser), Falstaff, Nabucco.
