Knut Skram

Knut Skram studied architecture and music at the Montana State University in USA for five years. During this period he already made frequent appearances as a soloist and at concerts and in opera both at the University and in New York. He returned to Norway in 1963 after an interval continued to study singing, first in Wiesbaden and then with Luigi Ricci in Rome. In 1964 he made his debut in Oslo and was immediately contracted to the Norwegian Opera, where he has sung over 50 roles here. He has been one of Norway’s foremost singers ever. In 1967 he won first prize at the international music competition in Munich, and in 1971 he won the Nordic song competition in Helsinki. He has participated in numeral recordings. Knut Skram has also received the medal of the St. Olavs Order for his achievements as an opera singer. He has made numerous guest appearances internationally, in Royal Albert Hall and Covent Garden in London, Paris, Arena di Verona, Vienna, Florence, Berlin, Munich, Brussels, Helsinki, Buenos Aires, Stockholm and at Glyndebourne. His main repertory includes: Phokos (Der Heilige), Enrico (Lucia di Lammermoor), Don Giovanni, Count Almaviva (Le Nozze di Figaro), Don Alfonso (Cosi fan tutte), Marcello (La Bohéme), Scarpia (Tosca), Jochanaan (Salome), Orest (Elektra), Simon Boccanegra, Germont (La traviata), Amonasro (Aida), Iago (Otello), Kurwenal (Tristan und Isolde), Amfortas (Parsifal), Der fliegende Holländer.

The Prague State Opera in cooperation with the Slovart publishing house publishes a representative book tracking the history of this significant cultural institution since its opening in 1888 till the end of the 2002/2003 season. The publication called The Prague State Opera – Theatre History in Pictures and Dates is focusing solely on the opera featured at the scene, even though the theatre under various names also served to presentation of drama plays, operettas and ballet. The Prague State opera plans to publish the volumes concentrating on those genres in the next years.
