Jiřina Přívratská

After having studied canto at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague in the class of Professor Jindřich Jindrák and Teodor Šrubař, she participated at the Dvořák–Singer–Contest in Karlovy Vary, the competition of the Ministry of Culture, where she was awarded for the best interpretation of modern music, twice at the International–Tchaikowski–Competition in Moscow. She sang her first important role, Panna Roza in Smetanas’ Tajemství, at the stage of the South Bohemian Theatre in České Budějovice where she became engaged in 1982. The following roles were Bizets’ Carmen, Dvořáks’ Káča, Mascagnis’ Santuzza and many others. Her success in the role of Iokaste in Stravinskis’ oratorio Oedipus Rex brought her to the National Theatre in 1989, and after the separation of ensembles she was one of the leading soloists of the State Opera Prague in 1992–2004. Here she incorporated Emilia in Otello, Fenena in Nabucco, Amneris in Aida, Ulrika in Masquerade, Eboli in Don Carlos, Azucena in Il Trovattore, Maddalena in Rigoletto, Suzuki in Madame Butterfly, Bianka in Zemlinskis’ The Tragedy of Florence, Third Lady in The Magic Flute.

The Prague State Opera in cooperation with the Slovart publishing house publishes a representative book tracking the history of this significant cultural institution since its opening in 1888 till the end of the 2002/2003 season. The publication called The Prague State Opera – Theatre History in Pictures and Dates is focusing solely on the opera featured at the scene, even though the theatre under various names also served to presentation of drama plays, operettas and ballet. The Prague State opera plans to publish the volumes concentrating on those genres in the next years.
