Csilla Boross

Csilla Boross studied piano, and subsequently voice, with Judit Németh, Boldizsár Keönch, Ilona Todody and Gabriella Imre at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. She frequented several master classes, with Ileana Cotrubas, Walter C. Moore, István Gáti, Ralf Döring, Anna Reynolds, Renato Bruson, and others. She started her career as a coloratura soprano, singing the parts of Konstanze (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Gilda (Rigoletto), Violetta (La traviata), Cleopatra (Giulio Cesare), and others. She currently devotes most of her energies to dramatic parts. Her gallery of roles includes, among others, creations of Donna Anna (Don Giovanni), Madama Butterfly, Tatyana (Eugene Onegin), Tosca, Venus (Tannhäuser), Aida, Adriana Lecouvreur or Lady Macbeth, and in the Czech repertoire, of Janáček’s Jenůfa and Káťa Kabanová. In the 2008/2009 season Csilla Boross performed Tosca (National Theatre in Szeged, Prague State Opera), Violetta (National Theatre in Brno), Donna Anna (Estates Theatre in Prague), Tatyana (National Theatre in Brno), Venus (Hungarian State Opera, and Japan), and Lady Macbeth (National Theatre in Brno).

In the 2009/2010 season Csilla Boross created Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte and Elettra in Idomeneo (National Theatre in Prague), and Aida in a new production of the National Theatre in Brno. V 2010/2011 season she guest appeared at the Teatro Verdi in Trieste (Violetta), Opera Palm Beach (Abigail in Nabucco), the Teatro Comunale in Modena (Lady Macbeth), the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma (Abigail, under the baton of Riccardo Muti), in Montpellier (Manon Lescaut) etc. In July and August 2011 she sang Tosca in the production of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma (at the Baths of Caracalla). In April and May 2012 she will perform Abigail at the Washington National Opera (stage director Thaddeus Strassberger, conductor Philippe Augin). Between 2002 and 2008 Csilla Boross was a soloist of the Hungarian State Opera in Budapest. Since the 2008/2009 season, she has been a soloist of the National Theatre in Brno opera company. Her creation of the title role of Madama Butterfly in the Janáček Opera of the National Theatre in Brno earned her the prestigious Thalia Award in 2009.

The Prague State Opera in cooperation with the Slovart publishing house publishes a representative book tracking the history of this significant cultural institution since its opening in 1888 till the end of the 2002/2003 season. The publication called The Prague State Opera – Theatre History in Pictures and Dates is focusing solely on the opera featured at the scene, even though the theatre under various names also served to presentation of drama plays, operettas and ballet. The Prague State opera plans to publish the volumes concentrating on those genres in the next years.
