Cast

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky composed his last opera The Queen of Spades in only forty-four days. The author of libretto based on Pushkin’s short story of the same title was Tchaikovsky’s brother Modest. The main idea of the work, which is an encounter of a man with the fate and a battle between life and death – fully corresponded with the composer’s state of mind. Tragic story of the main character Gherman is predestined from the right beginning. The motifs of fate, three cards and love are mutually infiltrating. The premiere on December 9, 1890 was a great success and was followed by triumphal performances in Kiev, Moscow and Prague. Our staging of the opera is conducted by the Bonn Opera Director Roman Kofman and directed by Roman Hovenbitzer, who already introduced himself at the Prague State Opera in March 2003 with the remarkably good staging of Lenocavall’s La Bohème.

Premiere: Nov 25, 2004

Running time: 2 hours 45 minutes with 1 intermission
Performed in Russian with Czech captions.

Response in the press

“A production like this will compare favourably with the European opera production standard.”

(Helena Havlíková, Lidové noviny)

“The premiere was clearly dominated by the Countess of Antonie Denygrová. The artist impressed the audience by her cultivated voice, outstanding at any pitch and dynamic timbre, with the velvet depth of her alto and roundness of her high pitch, as well as a striking sense of the dramatic breadth of the character.”

(Radmila Hrdinová, Právo)

“With The Queen of Spades, the Prague State Opera added to its repertory a standard production which may both attract and give satisfaction. The resulting performance stands the test.”

(Petr Veber, Hospodářské noviny)

The Prague State Opera in cooperation with the Slovart publishing house publishes a representative book tracking the history of this significant cultural institution since its opening in 1888 till the end of the 2002/2003 season. The publication called The Prague State Opera – Theatre History in Pictures and Dates is focusing solely on the opera featured at the scene, even though the theatre under various names also served to presentation of drama plays, operettas and ballet. The Prague State opera plans to publish the volumes concentrating on those genres in the next years.
