Giuseppe Verdi: A Masked Ball

Staging team

Cast

Verdi’s opera Un ballo in maschera from 1859 is one of the core repertoire items of opera houses everywhere and Prague is no exception. This work was given in the building of today’s State Opera for the first time in 1888. The libretto by Antonio Somma deals with a real historical event concerning King Gustav III of Sweden in the eighteenth century. The librettist based his work on a dramatic rendition by Eugène Scribe, who elaborated on the story of the murder of King Gustav for an opera by D. F. E. Auber. Because the censors did not want the murder of a king to be shown on stage Verdi had to modify his opera several times.

The Prague State Opera is preparing a new presentation of the staging from 1993 with Claes Fellbom serving as stage director.

Premiere: Aug 23, 2001

Running time: 3 hours 15 minutes with 2 intermissions
