The Prague State Opera has a new director

On Thursday July 1, 2010 the Oliver Dohnányi was inaugurated as the new director of the Prague State Opera.

Oliver Dohnányi studied conducting with Václav Neumann at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague and the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. He was the conductor of the Radio Symphony Orchestra in Bratislava, the principal conductor of the Slovak National Theatre Opera Orchestra and the conductor of the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra. Between 1993 and 1996 and in 2004-2007 period he was engaged as the principal conductor of the National Theatre Opera Orchestra in Prague. Recently he also served as the head of opera of the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre in Ostrava and the director of opera of the Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava. He has been a guest conductor with the outstanding opera houses (Buenos Aires, Zurich, Copenhagen, Vienna, Amsterdam, Basel, Düsseldorf, Naples, London, Leeds etc). In the period from 2001 to 2004 he was the permanent guest conductor with the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. He conducted prominent orchestras from all over the world, such as Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra (Tokyo), Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hungarian State Philharmonic Orchestra, the Portuguese Philharmonic Orchestra, the English Chamber Orchestra, London Mozart Players and the BBC Orchestra.

The Prague State Opera in cooperation with the Slovart publishing house publishes a representative book tracking the history of this significant cultural institution since its opening in 1888 till the end of the 2002/2003 season. The publication called The Prague State Opera – Theatre History in Pictures and Dates is focusing solely on the opera featured at the scene, even though the theatre under various names also served to presentation of drama plays, operettas and ballet. The Prague State opera plans to publish the volumes concentrating on those genres in the next years.
